The International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP)

Dear Colleagues,

The Corona pandemic is still highly active, and many countries are currently facing a 3rd or even a 4th wave. Although several efficient vaccines have been developed, it is not clear at what time the pandemic will be under control and when international conferences in presence mode will be possible again without any risks. The organizing and scientific committee members of ISBP2021 have therefore decided to postpone the symposium by another year to September 2022.

In order to not lose the contact among the ISBP “family” (and also the European version ESBP), we will replace ISBP2020/2021 and ESBP2021 by a weekly online international seminar series in spring/summer 2021.  To this end, group leaders, PhD students, company members working in the biopolymer field can present their results in a ≈ 30 min keynote lecture or in form of 10 min short lectures (two in a row per webinar).

The seminars will start on May 6 and will take place on Thursdays at 15 p.m central Europe time (corresponding to 22 p.m in Beijing, 23 p.m. Tokyo, midnight Brisbane, 9 a.m. New York, 6.a.m. Los Angeles). In case you would like to have an e-mail invitation with a link to the seminars, please subscribe to the newsletter.

Volunteers can suggest a lecture title and indicate a preference of the seminar date. Manfred, Dieter and Stanislav will make a selection if there are too many applications for a specific date.

It is foreseen that one scientific committee member of ISBP/ESBP will chair the session and after the lecture there will be the opportunity for a „social hour“ to give still a bit of a personal touch.

It is clear to us that this procedure does not replace a normal ISBP or ESBP meeting but it will make it possible that the biopolymer scientific community keeps in contact in the time of the pandemic. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity - especially for young researchers -  to show, share and to discuss results with others in the format of an international (online) meeting.

Depending on the ongoing of the Corona pandemic, the decision when and where the next ISBP/ESBP meeting in presence will be held, can be made in late 2021 (e. g. ISBP2022 in CH and ESBP 2023 in CZ). We hope that the situation about the pandemic will be clearer for a good decision by the end of this year.

Our best regards,

Dieter Jendrossek, Manfred Zinn and Stanislav Obruca

17th Edition • September 13-16, 2022 • Crans-Montana, Switzerland

The International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP) is a successful series of symposia on biopolymers that is taking place every two years since the very first meeting in Toronto 1988 (1990 Sitges/Barcelona, 1992 Göttingen, 1994 Montreal, 1996 Davos, 1998 Tokyo, 2000 Cambridge, 2002 Münster, 2004 Beijing, 2006 Minneapolis, 2008 Auckland, 2010 Stuttgart, 2012 Cairns, 2014 Santos, 2016 Madrid, and 2018 Beijing).

Organized by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland and the University of Stuttgart, the 17th edition is scheduled for September 2022 and will be held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

ISBP2022 will focus on microbially synthesized (bio)polymers like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), cellulose, pullulan, cyanophycin, polylactic acid (PLA), polyisoprenes (rubbers), but is also open for bio-based polymers (e.g. BioPET and PEF), and will include inorganic biopolymers such as polyphosphate (polyP).

The following topics will be covered during scientific sessions: Metabolic pathways and engineering, production and processing, functional biopolymers and building blocks, material science and engineering, biodegradation and recycling of biopolymers, sustainable feedstock and life cycle assessment, applications in industry (e.g. packaging, 3D printing) and medicine (the latter ones will be the focus of the “Industry day”). Outstanding abstracts will be selected for Pecha Kucha presentations (short oral presentations).

On the occasion of ISBP2022, four prices will find new owners:

  • ISBP Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Bernard Witholt PHA Award
  • Best scientific publication since ISBP2018
  • Best poster

Academic and industrial delegates are welcome to participate in ISBP2022.

You will be able to follow us soon on our new website www.isbp2022.com. Stay in touch !
